Robert Emmett McGrath, widely known as Bob McGrath, was born on June 13, 1932, in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of Flora Agnes (née Hallagan) and Edmund Thomas McGrath, a farmer. Named after the Irish patriot Robert Emmet, Bob displayed his musical talents from a young age, singing for his family while his mother played the piano. He participated in the Roxy Theater’s Amateur Program during his childhood, securing second place. Bob graduated from Marquette High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1954. Subsequently, he obtained a Master of Music degree in voice from the Manhattan School of Music in 1959.
