Monique Angela Hicks, popularly known as Mo’Nique, was born on December 11, 1967, in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland. Her mother, Alice Imes, is an engineer, and her father, Steven Imes Jr., is a drug counselor. She has three older siblings. Mo’Nique was sexually abused by her brother Gerald from ages 7 to 11.


She completed her high schooling at Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County in 1985. She then attended Morgan State University. In 1987, she graduated from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland.

She has been married three times and divorced twice. She first married her broadcasting school fellow Calvin Watkins, a sportswriter. She has a son Shalon Watkins, Jr. with him, born in 1990.
