UPS’s History at a Glance (From Its Foundations to Today)
Just picture it! One century ago, with even fewer resources than available to the modern world, two teenage entrepreneurs with nothing but the bravery on their backs take a risky lone. A wild one hundred bucks hoping to kickstart, small, American Messenger Company.Establishing themselves in a cellar beneath an uncle’s tavern,James E. Casey and Claude Ryanhit the ground running. Their first employees would deliver packages by bicycle or on foot.
Two years after his partner leaves the company in 1919, Casey begins to establish his business across the US. His success in California leads to the business’s Iconic titling in 1925. The three letters that would eventually be recognized across the globe. UPS. “United Parcel Service”-which would quickly dominate the West Coast by the end of the decade.
UPS makes it around the world in 1989- extending their services to Africa, Asia, and Europe. And five years later they strengthen their global ties as an established global enterprise by launching ups.com. Which would help people around the world track their packages.
How did those kids manage it? Lucky for us, UPS has already done the introspection for us. On their website, they present us with their Mission Statement. Laying out the virtues they strive to act on daily, the virtues that burned within Casey and Ryan themselves.
UPS’s Mission Statement Analysis
Within UPS’s pressroom page, UPS defines their mission as “What we seek to achieve,” they emphasize the merit, integrity, and accountability of their enterprise. And being a century in, it’s no wonder UPS has its priorities straight.
“Mission: What We Seek to Achieve- Grow our global business by serving the logistics needs of customers, offering excellence and value in all that we do. Maintain a financially strong company-with broad employee ownership-that provides a long-term competitive return to our shareowners. Inspire our people and business partners to do their best, offering opportunities for personal development and success. Lead by example as a responsible, caring, and sustainable company making a difference in the communities we serve.”
In beginning their elaborate mission statement, UPS solidifies its integrity in service, Promising to grow only in the name of their customers. They define this in two ways:
As a global enterprise of logistics, first, UPS promises to actively strengthen the bond between their points of origin and points of consumption. And it’s evident. UPS makes the world a little smaller as they connect two hundred and twenty plus nationsacross the face of the earth.
Furthermore, they claim their logistics only in the best quality, and it truly defines their “go big or go home mentality”- creating a clear message to their costumers that heed any attention to their competitors by saying, “Whenwe do something, you can expect it to be done right.”
And it makes perfect sense. Even as they were just establishing themselves in the 1900s.Even asThe United Parcel Service rapidly expanded, the corporation still actively worked to innovate its service and pay close attention to work purely for its people. In fact, their CEO George Smith from 1962- 1972 stated, ”We are constantly evolving new and improved ways, methods and facilities to better perform our work and service.”
UPS’s Vision Statement Analysis
UPS’s pressroom websitealso presents us with words of envisionment for their company. While the fact sheet doesn’t exactly declare it a “Vision Statement”, it still clarifies UPS’s prospect as a company. They call it the “UPS Enterprise Strategy”. After all, successful entrepreneurs strategize their dreams- if they can see, they can do. In seven powerful words, it is as follows,
“Create Value, Transform, and Invest to Grow”
It’s clear the United Parcel Service has three big mantras and they envision these things to be implemented religiously in whatever the do. This suggests that while they have a “go big or go home mentality” they won’t go unless they are capable of, one- creating quality, two-contributing a step towards innovation, and three- investing in UPS’s development. This just goes to show that having accountability for every action we make is a useful tool on a journey to success.
UPS’s Core Values Analysis
Their seven core values are as follows, “Values: Our Enduring Beliefs, Integrity – It is the core of who we are and all we do. Teamwork – Determined people working together can accomplish anything. Service – Serving the needs of our customers and communities is central to our success. Quality and Efficiency-We remain constructively dissatisfied in our pursuit of excellence. Safety – The well-being of our people, business partners, and the public is of utmost importance. Sustainability-Long-term prosperity requires our continued commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Innovation – Creativity and change are essential to growth.”
UPS’s Core Values truly add transparency to its name. As customers, we strive for those who will fulfill our needs- understanding that our trust in their service is to be reciprocated in their integrity. And UPS has added that will to the list.
The United Parcel Service continues to prove its “people- first” mentality. UPS is dedicated to quality, but they understand that quality comes from the dedicated work of loyal “people systems”.
They quote, “Determined people working together can accomplish anything.”
It’s no doubt that UPS is driven to be truly customer-centric. It is stated in the mission statement as well. However, here we see UPS honing in specifically on serving the needs of their communities. Our current situation is a prime example of UPS’s dedication to community. Their website quotes,
“We’re Here for You. UPS drivers will continue to pick up and deliver, even in restricted areas. While our customer care teams respond to a higher than normal call volume, here are some resources to help you get started…”
Through thick and thin UPS is catering to communities all over the world. It’s no wonder they lead the way in their industry. Coronavirus has highlighted that.
4. Quality and Efficiency
“We remain constructively dissatisfied in our pursuit of excellence.” UPS is actively innovating. As they say, “…Innovation Driven”. UPS is and will continue to be, “constructively dissatisfied in our pursuit of excellence.”
The United Parcel Service aims to be a sustainable enterprise. It is very thoughtful in its actions-making every move to add to the positive development of UPS.
I think it’s essential in any business endeavor- to strive every day to progress.
